SUMMARY:Happy Hour History: The Life and Times of Bennet Riley
DESCRIPTION:One of Buffalo’s least remembered yet most historically significant heroes was Major General Bennet C. Riley. He served in the U.S. Army for 40 years from the War of 1812 through the Mexican War and culminated with his serving as the last military governor of California during the famous “California Gold Rush”.  In the early 1840s\, Riley was commanding officer of the Buffalo Barracks\, an army post located on what is now the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site. The experience of Riley during his time here and his interactions with notable Buffalonians convinced him to return here after his military service was finished. \nGeneral Riley’s life and career\, including his time here in Buffalo\, will be discussed by local historian Thomas F. Schobert. He is the author of “Hush the Cannon’s Roar – The Life and Times of Bennet Riley: Defender of Buffalo” \nDoors open at 5:30pm \nProgram: 6pm-8pm \nThere will be a book signing at the end. DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy a tour of the ground where the Pan-American Exposition took place over 100 years ago.  Buffalo\, which in 1901 was the 8th largest city in the United States\, hosted over 8 million people from around the world.  Learn about the exhibits\, the shows\, the sounds and smells that could be experienced while visiting the fair.  Start at the Buffalo History Museum\, which is the only structure from the exposition that is still standing\, and walk along streets of Buffalo where stadiums\, buildings\, fountains\, and waterways once gave visitors strange\, exotic and dramatic entertainment. \nThe tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours.  The cost is $20 ($10 for members) and includes a souvenir map guide.  The tour begins at The Buffalo History Museum at 10:30 AM. General Lafayette played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War and had a significant impact on the history of the United States. Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in history and enjoy a tasty meal at the same time! \nAs the last surviving Major General of the Revolutionary War\, General Lafayette was invited by President James Monroe and Congress to visit the 24-state Union for what would become his Farewell Tour of the United States of America. Accompanied by his Secretary Auguste Levasseur and his son George Washington Lafayette\, he visited all 24 states of the Union in 14 months (August 1824 – September 1825). On June 4\, 1825\, Lafayette was welcomed to the village of Buffalo and on the following day was invited to breakfast at the Niagara Street home of Brigadier General/Erie Canal Commissioner Peter Buell Porter in the village of Upper Black Rock. \nPurchase tickets here

SUMMARY:Civil War Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:The Buffalo Civil War Round Table is pleased to be presenting Dr. Jennifer M. Murray at the Buffalo History Museum\, on Wednesday\, June 18 at 6:00 pm. Dr. Murray is American military historian\, with a specialization in the U.S. Civil War. At Auburn University\, from where she received her graduate degree\, she studied under the renowned historian Kenneth Noe. Dr. Murray is a native of Pennsylvania and Maryland\, and recently accepted a new position as a professor at West Virginia’s Shepherd University\, where she will also direct the Civil War Institute. Previously\, she taught at Oklahoma State University and at universities in Virginia and South Carolina. In addition\, Dr. Murray participates as a presenting scholar and battlefield guide for Gettysburg College’s annual Civil War Institute. She began her career with the National Park Service as a historian at the Gettysburg National Military Park. \nShe is the author of On A Great Battlefield: The Making\, Management\, and Memory of Gettysburg National Military Park\, 1933-2013\, published by the University of Tennessee Press in 2014. Her current book project\, tentatively titled\, “Meade at War: The Military Life of George Gordon Meade” is a biography of the Union Army of the Potomac commander at Gettysburg. \nAlong with her commitment to teaching\, publishing and public history\, she also serves on the editorial advisory board for the Kent State University Press book series “Interpreting the Civil War.” \n$12 Admission / Free for members \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE

SUMMARY:Pan-Am Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy a tour of the ground where the Pan-American Exposition took place over 100 years ago.  Buffalo\, which in 1901 was the 8th largest city in the United States\, hosted over 8 million people from around the world.  Learn about the exhibits\, the shows\, the sounds and smells that could be experienced while visiting the fair.  Start at the Buffalo History Museum\, which is the only structure from the exposition that is still standing\, and walk along streets of Buffalo where stadiums\, buildings\, fountains\, and waterways once gave visitors strange\, exotic and dramatic entertainment. \nThe tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours.  The cost is $20 ($10 for members) and includes a souvenir map guide.  The tour begins at The Buffalo History Museum at 10:30 AM. SUMMARY:"Terrakwa: Where Memory\, Place\, and Water Meet" Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores the Erie Canal\, not just as something from history\, but as a place that’s alive and changing. The collaborative artists Paul Bartow and Richard Metzgar used interviews\, maps\, and research to show how people and nature interact with the canal today. Their work depicts the canal as a vibrant\, diverse\, and active place. \nTerrakwa shares stories from people who live\, work\, and spend their time along the Erie Canal. These personal stories help us understand the many roles the canal plays as a workplace\, a spot for recreation\, and as a natural habitat. The artists also included unique drawings made by trees along the canal. These drawings were created naturally over time by weather and wind\, showing how nature and humans both shape the environment. \nThis exhibition celebrates the Erie Canal’s Bicentennial (2017–2025)\, highlighting the canal’s importance both in the past and today. Visitors are invited to think about how the canal continues to affect people and the environment\, and how it might change in the future. \nThis exhibit opening is a free event and open to the public.
