Utter is the senior historian of transportation\, agriculture\, science\, technology\, and economics at the New York State Museum. Major exhibition and publication projects include Enterprising Waters: The History and Art New York’s Erie Canal in honor of the canal’s bicentennial. He also co-authored The Motorcycle Industry in New York State\, Second Edition. Current research projects include work on 19th century fire engine manufacturing in New York State\, and various aspects of the New York State canal system.
